Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly competing to sign South American football talents, with both clubs interested in young players from the region.
Liverpool have expressed interest in River Plate’s 17-year-old midfielder, Franco Mastantuono. Mastantuono has become a regular starter for River Plate, attracting attention from several European clubs. His contract includes a release clause that starts at $45 million, increasing to $50 million as the transfer window nears. Real Madrid is considered the favorite to secure his signature, with Manchester City and Barcelona also monitoring his progress.
On the other hand, Manchester City have reportedly agreed to a £17 million deal to sign Argentine winger Dario Sarmiento, who has been dubbed the “mini Messi.” Sarmiento currently plays for Estudiantes, where former midfielder Juan Sebastián Verón serves as chairman. The transfer is expected to be finalized when Sarmiento turns 18 in March.
Additionally, both Liverpool and Manchester City are said to be scouting young talents Agustin Ruberto and Ian Subiabre during the South American Under-20 Championship. Ruberto, a 19-year-old striker, has drawn comparisons to Robert Lewandowski, while 18-year-old winger Subiabre has been likened to Bernardo Silva. Chelsea is also reportedly interested in both players.
These developments highlight the intense competition among top European clubs to secure emerging South American talents.
