Following the devastating news of his death on Monday at the age of 48, American Horror Stories star Gavin Creel has received an overwhelming amount of heartfelt tributes. Gavin died at home in Manhattan from a rare and aggressive form of cancer, of which he had only received a diagnosis in July. Gavin was receiving therapy for sarcoma, a disease that develops in connective tissues like bones, muscles, lipids, nerves, and blood vessels, according to his partner Alex Temple Ward. Usually, the condition affects the legs and arms.According to the Mirror, the actor was having treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York before being moved to hospice care at home. Gavin left a lasting impression on Broadway during his remarkable career, being nominated for a Tony Award in 2002 for his main role in the Broadway production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. In the UK, Gavin was especially well-known for his 2012–2015 performance of Elder Price in The Book of Mormon, which earned him the esteemed Olivier Award. He won a Tony Award in 2017 for his performance with the legendary Bette Midler in Hello, Dolly! as Cornelius Hackl. Leading the tributes on social media, Bette posted on X, “The brilliant actor Gavin Creel, beloved by the Broadway community, has passed away from a rare form of cancer.” In Hello, Dolly!, he portrayed Cornelius Hackl to my Dolly, and I eagerly anticipated collaborating with him each night. He was outstanding. It’s unbelievable that he’s gone. How tragic.” Idina Menzel, a Broadway legend, posted on Instagram: “Gavin Creel, you are very lovely. Among the angels, an angel. I adore you so much.” “Gavin Creel,” Bernadette Peters continued. What a lovely person, what a wonderful voice, what a brilliant performer. RIP.
