There always remained hope that he might recapture that form though, with these loan spells indicative that the club had not completely given up on the 27-year-old.
Keane, however, has never really enjoyed that period of sustained success, always remaining a sluggish asset for the club who was liable to make a huge error that would let the side down.
Enjoying his best form under Carlo Ancelotti, as most of the current squad did, he convinced the club to invest in a lucrative long-term deal for the Burnley man, tying him down until 2025.

Inarguably, were it not for this contract, his exit would have been sanctioned long ago.
Fortunately, with Jake O’Brien now at the club, it is unlikely that we will see much of Keane in what will surely be his final season.

Sean Dyche should abandon Kalvin Phillips pursuit and start 21-year-old Everton ‘talent’ instead

It is common knowledge that another midfielder is next, and potentially last up on Everton’s list of transfer targets.
After all, this should come as no surprise, given the sacrifice the club were forced to make by selling Amadou Onana.
He was, and remains one of Europe’s hottest young properties, but it always felt like he and Sean Dyche were never bound to see eye to eye.
Thus, his exit was graciously sanctioned, and the club welcomed a huge fee.

But, it has left a big gap in the engine room that some might consider tough to replace.
However, for others, there is already a readymade replacement just waiting to be unleashed…
Everton remain interested in Kalvin Phillips
For those who subscribe to the former school of thought, desperate that Kevin Thelwell wade into the market one last time to snag a midfield maestro, they will be delighted to see the continued links suggesting that Everton want to sign Kalvin Phillips.
MORE EVERTON STORIES
The Manchester City midfielder has had a tough time ever since trading his boyhood Leeds United for the Premier League champions, and whilst the club has only gone from strength to strength, his career has dwindled.
Once one of the top talents within English football, seemingly set to become a mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s squad, instead he has fallen down the international and club pecking order, even failing to make the grade on loan at West Ham United last year.
There is a remarkable player hiding within Phillips, but at 28 years old, and with four years still left on his deal, the only club that can possibly benefit from a potential loan move is City.
After all, they are unlikely to sell their £42m man in a hurry should he come and impress at Goodison Park, and should he fail, Phillips will have just occupied a spot in the midfield where Tim Iroegbunam could have been starring instead.
Tim Iroegbunam deserves to start for Everton
The 21-year-old, who actually joined before Onana’s exit, was initially the subject of intense media scrutiny given his ties to Everton’s supposed PSR loophole.
However, quickly becoming a starter throughout pre-season, the £9m invested already looks like a steal, with the suggestion by journalist Deji Faremi that he is a ‘talent‘ seemingly an understatement.
The media are raving over Iroegbunam, and rightly so, with his progressive impetus in the midfield combined with his unrelenting efforts to stick a foot in and disrupt the opposition.
He is athletic and technically astute, and deserves to start the Premier League season after the form he is exhibiting.

Even Sean Dyche has praised Iroegbunam.
So, it would be such a shame to see his potential spot taken by Phillips, a temporary fix who might not even perform better than the former Aston Villa man would.

Everton’s summer transfer window has certainly turned out to be a lively one with Kevin Thelwell hard at work on both ins and outs.
Sean Dyche has seen his squad bolstered this summer at Goodison Park with Everton looking to avoid another season of relegation scares.
Some of those new signings are already looking like positive signings made by the Toffees going off their early showings in the pre-season friendlies.
Jake O’Brien wowed during his debut against Preston North End where he even managed to get his name on the scoresheet.
But the Blues may not be done just there in the market as the rumours continue to circle Merseyside ahead of the deadline at the end of the month.
And Alan Myers has now chipped in with his understanding of one of the latest reports to emerge on Vitor Roque.

Providing Dyche with some further options up top will have been a huge emphasis in Everton’s summer transfer plans.

The Toffees were simply not good enough in attack last season and that has seen Everton linked with a potential move for Barcelona’s Roque.
However, taking to social media, Myers has now shared his understanding on the situation surrounding the 19-year-old forward.

Everton have reportedly had a big rejected for Roque over recent hours with Barcelona having held a meeting about the player’s future.
But Myers has issued a simple four-word message on the speculation surrounding Roque and a potential move to Goodison.
“I don’t believe so,” Myers replied when asked if there was any truth in the rumours.

Perhaps not the news Everton fans will have been hoping for but there is still plenty of time for the Blues to bring in another option this summer.
Everton need to solve their striker problem this summer
An interesting couple of weeks lie ahead of Everton when it comes to making a decision on who is going to lead the line up top.
Myers has already suggested Dominic Calvert-Lewin has not quite looked himself up front for Everton this summer.
This comes amid reports of Calvert-Lewin’s future at Everton not being sealed as he enters the final 12 months of his contract on Merseyside.
It is believed Dyche has now decided to keep Beto at Everton this summer despite the links over a potential move to Atalanta.
Iliman Ndiaye has been added to the options up top, but if a player like Calvert-Lewin is to leave, then Everton are surely going to have to dive into the market.
