SAD NEWS: MAGGIE SMITH PASSES AWAY, AND HER FAMILY RELEASES A DEVASTATING STATEMENT!!!
In a devastating statement, Dame Maggie Smith’s family announced her passing at the age of 89. The legendary actress, who gained fame for her parts as Violet Crawley in Downton Abbey and Professor McGonagall, died “peacefully” in the hospital earlier today.
Many have already paid tribute to her, praising her as a “true British icon.”
Gyles Brandreth is one of those who posted on X to express his shock at the tragic news. “The saddest news: Dame Maggie Smith’s passing signifies the end of a remarkable life and a golden age. She was a wonderful, wise, funny, and shrewd actress who was regarded as “one of the greats” and the best companion. Unmatched in every manner and, as a result, priceless.” Her sons Chris Larkin and Toby Stephens released a statement through their publicist, stating, “It is with great sadness we have to announce the death of Dame Maggie Smith.”She died quietly this morning, Friday, September 27, in the hospital.
An exceedingly private individual, she passed away surrounded by loved ones. She leaves behind two sons and five devoted grandchildren who are inconsolable over the passing of their remarkable grandmother and mother. This is our chance to express our gratitude to the amazing staff at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital for their unwavering kindness and care during her last days. “We appreciate all of your kind words and encouragement, but we ask that you please respect our privacy at this time.”
Since making her stage debut in 1952, the actress’s career has spanned over 70 years.
She went on to become a critically acclaimed stage and film star after that, taking home two Oscars for Best Supporting Actress in A Room with a View and Best Actress in a Leading Role for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, among other honors. That same year, she wed playwright Alan Beverly Cross, and the two stayed together until his passing in March 1998.
“It seems a bit pointless, going on on one’s own, and not having someone to share it with,” she said in response to a question about loneliness in 2013. Five grandchildren are hers.
