Nathaniel Edwards Toronto FC announced on Tuesday that the club has signed TFC II striker Charlie Sharp and defender Nathaniel Edwards to first-team MLS contracts through 2025, with options for 2026 and 2027. Sharp, 23, has registered five goals and two assists in 16 appearances for TFC II in MLS NEXT Pro action this year since joining the Young Reds in February and is highly regarded by club staff.
“We are happy to officially elevate Charlie at this time,” said Jason Hernandez. “His strong mentality and mature playing style will be a welcomed addition to our young player group in the first team .”Prior to signing with Toronto FC II, Sharp spent five seasons at Western Michigan University, where he registered 42 goals and 22 assists in 89 appearances. Last year, he was the NCAA’s leading goalscorer in Division I men’s soccer with 19 goals, including seven game-winning strikes. That form saw him named a finalist for the 2023 MAC Hermann Trophy, the most coveted individual honour in NCAA Division I soccer, and he was named the National Scholar Player of the Year by the United Soccer Coaches.
Sharp has already received three short-term call-ups to the first team this year and made his Toronto FC debut against Nashville SC on May 15. He also came off the bench for his second TFC appearance against Houston Dynamo late last month.
Like Sharp, Edwards has also signed three short-term agreements this season and has also already debuted for the first team, playing 45 minutes CS Saint-Laurent in the Canadian Championship on May 21.
This year has been the 21-year-old wing-back’s first season with Toronto FC II as well, after he joined the club’s MLS NEXT Pro side in February out of college. He has one goal and two assists in 23 appearances, including 17 starts, in MLS NEXT Pro a ction.
