As general manager Brad Treliving works to improve the Toronto Maple Leafs squad for the 2024-25 season, head coach Craig Berube is likely to engage with players on his roster. If Treliving wants to strengthen the mindset and toughness of his club, he should recruit additional players with the same style as the ones he has brought in—those who can play the game but also have some bite.
Tanner Jeannot, who isn’t a good fit for the Lightning, is one guy the Leafs should try to acquire. While playing with the Nashville Predators, Jeannot scored a few goals, but he eventually faded and may use a fresh start. If the two clubs are able to come to an agreement on a trade for Jeannot, he would be a good addition to the team because he can help stabilize the checking line and has potential to grow into a more prominent role.
A successful trade for the Maple Leafs would be if Jeannot can regain his old form and score 15 goals or more per season. A mid-tier prospect and one or two draft picks might be enough to convince the Lightning to lower their asking price in light of Jeannot’s underwhelming play.
The Maple Leafs would get a more talented Ryan Reaves in Jeannot, who can score more goals and provide a physical presence on a second power-play unit, if they signed him. For the Maple Leafs’ new direction under Treliving and Berube, he is an ideal complement to players like Jeannot and Reaves, who bring a fearless and expansive style to the team’s play.
