LATEST UPDATE: Bronze Statue of Ohio State Buckeyes Legend Archie Griffin Revealed, Commemorating His Historic Contributions to College Football
On August 30, 2024, Ohio State University unveiled a bronze statue of legendary running back Archie Griffin at the North Rotunda of Ohio Stadium. This tribute honors Griffin’s unparalleled achievements in college football and his lasting impact on the Buckeye community.

Archie Griffin, a Columbus native, is celebrated as the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner in NCAA history, securing the prestigious award in 1974 and 1975. During his tenure at Ohio State from 1972 to 1975, Griffin amassed 5,589 rushing yards and 26 touchdowns, leading the Buckeyes to four consecutive Big Ten titles and four Rose Bowl appearances. He is one of only two players to start in four Rose Bowl Games.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by family, former teammates, university officials, and fans. Griffin expressed his gratitude, stating, “This is the icing on top of the cake. I’ve had a lot of awards and honors, and I never thought that this would happen.” He emphasized that the statue represents not just his accomplishments but also the collective efforts of his teammates and coaches.
Ohio State’s head football coach, Ryan Day, highlighted Griffin’s exemplary character, noting, “When I think of Archie Griffin, I think about unmatched class.” The statue, crafted by artist Brian Hanlon, is a replica of the one unveiled earlier that month at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, California, commemorating the 50th anniversary of Griffin’s first Heisman win.
Griffin’s legacy extends beyond the field. He has been a pillar in the Columbus community, serving as a role model and mentor. His contributions have been recognized with numerous accolades, including induction into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1986 and the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in 1990.

The statue serves as a lasting tribute to Griffin’s extraordinary career and his enduring influence on Ohio State football and the broader community. It stands as an inspiration for future generations, embodying the spirit of excellence and dedication that Griffin exemplified.
