Matheus Nunes, a midfielder for Manchester City, has reportedly been arrested on suspicion of stealing a cell phone from a nightclub in Madrid. According to reports, the 26-year-old Portuguese international was detained at the sprawling disco La Riviera early on September 8 and brought to a nearby police station to be questioned. The arrest happened at 5:30 in the morning, according to the Spanish daily El Mundo (via Daily Mail). He was charged with stealing the phone from a 58-year-old man who had attempted to take a picture of him in the nightclub restroom without authorization. Nunes, a Brazilian native, is alleged to have grabbed the phone out of rage and refused to give it back. El Mundo reports that after the police were called to the club and verified the footballer was still in possession of the phone, they made the arrest. At the nightclub, the former Wolves player was allegedly handcuffed before being brought to a National Police station in the Arganzuela neighborhood of Madrid. After a lawyer intervened, he was freed a few hours later. According to El Mundo, he will probably be charged with something and put on trial for it.
“I can confirm a Portuguese national was arrested in the early hours of September 8 at a Madrid nightclub on suspicion of stealing another person’s mobile phone,” a spokesman for the National Police in Madrid stated. Police said they could not comment on whether the man arrested was the football player, Matheus Nunes, a midfielder for Man City, but they did confirm the man was born in 1998. “This matter will now be resolved by way of a trial in court,” stated a reliable source. According to reports, Nunes was in Madrid with friends last month after Portugal had not called him up for international duty. In City’s first game following the international break, the 26-year-old played the last minutes of their 2-1 victory over Brentford after coming off the bench. Last month, in Man City’s 2-1 Carabao Cup victory over Watford, Nunes earned his first start of the season and scored the team’s second goal. He did not play in either of Man City’s previous two Premier League games against Arsenal or Newcastle, but on Tuesday night, they defeated Slovan Bratislava 4-0 in the Champions League.
