While the New York Rangers and their fans were enthralled by rookie sensation Matt Rempe’s meteoric ascension, the youngster has been noticeably absent since the season concluded in early June. The first video of Rempe interacting with fans in Alberta, Canada, since the beginning of the offseason training, surfaced on July 7 (h/t @BR OpenIce), and it quickly went viral. It seems Rempe is making the most of his vacation by instructing people in skate fighting.
The video shows Rempe instructing ice hockey fighting methods to members of a boxing club in Alberta. It was shared by Bleacher Report on X (previously known as Twitter). It’s interesting to see that the training sessions seem to center about technique rather than fighting, which provides some understanding of the physical needs and abilities required for skating combat. Rempe is just trying to have fun this summer, getting involved with the community, staying active, and training a bit after finishing his first season in the NHL. So, it’s no surprise that he organized this event.
Plans for Rempe’s Rookie Season and the Offseason
In the 2024 NHL Stadium Series game versus the NY Islanders, Rempe made his debut. He failed to even wait for the puck to drop before making his intentions clear. On February 18, in front of 70,000 spectators at MetLife Stadium, Rempe fought veteran Matt Martin for the first time, and ever since then, his fame has only grown. The youngster played in 17 games during the regular season, scoring one and assisting on another. Additionally, the rookie scored the first goal of the playoffs for the Rangers and appeared in eleven postseason games.
