While Brian MacLellan will continue in his role as president of hockey operations, the Washington Capitals have elevated Chris Patrick to the position of senior vice president and general manager. Patrick will work as the Capitals’ representative to the NHL GM meetings and serve as the main contact for the other GMs in the league. Everything pertaining to hockey will still be under MacLellan’s purview, and he will report to him.
Patrick, who has held the positions of pro scout, director of player personnel, associate general manager, and assistant general manager before becoming the sixth general manager in franchise history, is 48 years old. Additionally, he oversaw the club’s professional scouting department and collaborated closely with the Calder Cup-winning Hershey Bears, Washington’s AHL affiliate.
With a BS in politics and economics from Princeton University in 1998 and an MBA from UVA’s Darden School of Business in 2006, Patrick is a highly accomplished business professional. He played hockey for four years at Princeton University after growing up in the Washington, DC area and attending Connecticut’s Kent School.
Since the Capitals appointed MacLellan, 65, general manager on May 26, 2014, he has been with the team. Since then, the Capitals have amassed the third-most wins in NHL history with a record of 449-244-88 (.631 point percentage). From 2015–16 to 2019–20, Washington won the Metropolitan Division five times in a row under MacLellan’s watch. The Capitals also won a Stanley Cup and two Presidents’ Trophies.
In 1995, MacLellan earned a Master of Business Administration in finance from the University of St. Thomas after earning a Bachelor of Science in business administration from Bowling Green State University.
