Schmid was traded from the New Jersey Devils to the Golden Knights last week. In addition to Schmid, the Golden Knights also got forward Alexander Holtz in the transaction. In his previous season with the Devils, Schmid posted a record of 5-9-1 while allowing 3.15 goals per game and a save percentage of.895. The 2018 NHL Draft saw the goalie, who was born in Sweden, taken in the fifth round, 136th overall.
Two years ago, Schmid was a key cog in the Devils’ first-round triumph over the Rangers. Sadly, Schmid was unable to repeat that feat this season. The Devils and Schmid were in the midst of a goaltending stalemate. The Devils got Jake Allen and Jacob Markstrom in a transaction that happened at the trade deadline. Schmid’s Function With Adin Hill starting in goal for Vegas, Schmid will most likely battle for the job of backup goalie. Ilya Samsonov, who started for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the playoffs after a late-season surge last year, was also acquired by the Golden Knights.
The intriguing thing about Schmid’s two-year, one-way contract is that it is not transferable. He will continue to get his NHL pay regardless of whether he is sent to the minor leagues or not. The goal of these clubs is usually to keep that guy out of the minors. Having said that, such occurrences do occur. Both Schmid and Samsonov appear to be in a battle for the backup job during preseason and training camp. The goalkeeper who was not selected as the backup for the Golden Knights’ American Hockey League affiliate, the Henderson Silver Nights, will likely start for that team.
