With the NHL free agency window opening in just over two weeks, the New York Rangers decided to clear some salary cost space by placing forward Barclay Goodrow on waivers Tuesday. The news was first reported by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The only reason the New York Rangers are doing this is to try to cap the team’s salary and attract interest from other clubs. The signing rights to Goodrow were traded by the Tampa Bay Lightning to the Rangers in exchange for a seventh-round pick in the 2021 draft. Quickly, the New York Knicks signed him to a six-year deal with an average annual value (AAV) of $3.642; the deal has three years left on it. As an energy line penalty killer, Goodrow helped the Lightning win two Stanley Cups. During Goodrow’s three seasons with the Knicks, the team advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals twice.
Goodrow had a disappointing 2023–24 regular season, failing to reach 30 points in either of his previous two seasons with the Rangers. In 80 games played, he managed just 12 points (4 goals, 8 assists). He compensated for it in the postseason, where he appeared in 16 games and scored eight points (6 goals, 2 assists). Even though his stats improved in the spring, New York had a terrible time matching up with him in a five-on-five situation. When Goodrow was not in the lineup, the Rangers scored 34.2% of their goals.
