A Legacy of Excellence
Born on January 9, 1987, in Charlotte, North Carolina, James Burton “J.B.” Mauney began his professional bull riding career in 2005. He quickly rose through the ranks, earning the PBR Rookie of the Year title in 2006. Mauney’s fearless approach to bull riding, often choosing the most challenging bulls, earned him the nickname “the Dragonslayer.” He is widely regarded as one of the greatest bull riders of his generation.
Mauney’s accolades include two PBR World Championships (2013 and 2015), two PBR World Finals event titles (2009 and 2013), and over 30 Premier Series wins. The Heroes & Legends Celebration

The PBR Heroes & Legends celebration is an annual event that honors individuals who have made substantial contributions to bull riding and the rodeo community. The ceremony recognizes recipients with five prestigious awards: the Ring of Honor, the Sharon Shoulders Award, the Jim Shoulders Lifetime Achievement Award, the Brand of Honor, and the Ty Murray Top Hand Award. Each award highlights a different aspect of the sport and acknowledges the honorees’ impact
In 2023, the Heroes & Legends ceremony moved from Las Vegas to its new permanent home at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. This transition aligns with the museum’s mission to celebrate and preserve the history of rodeo and Western heritage. The expanded PBR Hall of Fame within the museum showcases artifacts that honor the sport’s evolution and its influential figures citeturn0search2
